does anybody know where the backup power supply is for the airbags on a 95 explorer or how to reset the darn thing? i believe it may also be called a voltage fault that caused a code 52.
It is built in to the SRS computer which is located behind the front passenger kick panel. If the error has been fixed, the code & airbag light will get cleared after 256 consecutive clear SRS self-tests. I set off my airbag light a couple of years ago by pulling out the airbag fuse while my engine was running. When I put the fuse back in the light didn't go out. I removed my SRS computer to try and drain the backup supply but coldn't figure how how. I ended up disconnecting the connector to my emergency fuel pump shut-off switch and turned my key from off to on 256 times to get the light to go out. It took about 1 1/2 hours. Every time you turn your key from off to on, your SRS goes through a self-test. When the airbag light goes off, the test is complete. If a fault had been recorded the light will come back on a few seconds later. When my light came back on, I turned the key back to off and repeated this until the light didn't come back on. I chose this method since I knew mine didn't have a fault anymore since I put the fuse back in. If I wasn't sure if the fault was fixed or not, I might not have done this since it was time consuming. If the fault would have still been present, the light would not have gotten cleared. A shop with an NGS Star Tester can clear the light for you in less than two minutes. That is how I had mine cleared the first time I pulled the airbag fuse while my Wife was pregnant. I took it to the dealer I bought it at and asked them if they would clear the light. I told them I removed the fuse and put it back in. The guy came out with his scanner and plugged it in and hit a couple of buttons and the light went out. A regular OBD-II scanner is not capable of clearing it.
Yes, any Ford dealer will (should) have one. Unfortunately they will charge you 1/2 to 1 hour of labor for the 5 minutes it takes them to clear it. Did you turn your key on and wait until the light started flashing each time? If you just turned the key on and off before the light had a chance to start flashing then you didn't let it go through its self-test procedure. If you did then the system is still detecting a fault in the airbag system. The fuse I had removed was the one from the rectangular fuse box under the hood by the brake master cylinder.
THXS REBERHARDT, IT WORKED. SOMEWHERE AROUND 300 TIMES, THEN AGAIN ,YOU COULD BE RIGHT ABOUT NOT LETTING IT DO IT'S THING ON STARTUP. I APPRECIATED YOUR HELP, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
