I built my previous truck ('77 F-250) on bags. It was a lifted 4WD and I'm not sure if that's what you're wanting or a 2WD, but regardless I loved it. My current truck ('78 F-350 Crew Cab project truck) will be done on bags eventually as well.
Well I want to lower the truck but still use it as a truck. I think the best way to do this is with airbags.
One question though about the GMC springs. Why? are they better spring rate or shorter spring?
Has anybody airbaged the front end of these trucks?
I hate Twin Idiot Beam suspensions so I am using an entire GMC 3/4T front suspension. It is difficult to do tho. LOTS of chop, splice, and fabrication.
If thats the same truck I seen at the Jamboree. I has a huge amount of articulaion they had it pulled up on a 4ft ramp and the other 3 tires were on the ground. Awesome!
I would like to know how the front steering was done in order to put on air bag's. I also would like to convert my F-250 over to the air bag but I did'nt have another spare 4 year's to let it sit while I tried to figure it out.
4X4nut, you got any pic's of the suspension? Steering linkage?
well PF i aint crazy about it unless it was just a street and mild camp road truck
or simular indipend susp
sticking to nice "harsh" solid axles and may gusset them once i regear it
The TIB suspension system is brute strong but it does absolutely nothing else right that a suspension should do. So I am changing it out. I have had many vehicles over the years with TIB and it is just a bad design. Check out any book or reference on suspension geometry and design for more information. TIB is great if you want to chew up tires and feel every joint in the road.
4x4 nut did you build the truck in the pics I saw it ( i think)
Jamboree Indianapolis last year forsale then on ebay 4 months later same truck?
Yes, I did build this one and it might be the one you're thinking. I had it to Indy a few times- once for sale. It would have been the following winter on Ebay as well. I ended up selling it in March of '03.
Here's the front suspension. It has crossover steering and a lower steering box. Crossover is a great steering design for anyone looking to put a big lift under their's. http://www.katkustoms.com/albums/album01/Front_susp.jpg
Hehehe, I use just about any part that is good. I am running a Mopar air filter box at the moment. The only real problem I am worrying about is how to weld GM steel to Ford steel... Will the welds dissolve or turn to dust??? Will the Ford iron worms fight with the GM iron worms??? HEY!!! Maybe I am on to something here!!! Maybe the iron worms will fight and kill each other off!!!
an air bag drop kit would have to be custom made a good bit of chopping and fabrication. i've been looking for one for a while and i haven't found any make and model specific kits.
