I have a 1999 Ford Ranger with 105,xxx. My Speedometer has recently stopped working, and bounces back and forth between 60 and 75 mph. I had a diagnostic run on it at AutoZone and they said the Speed Control Sensor is malfunctioning. It is either a bad wire or the sensor itself. Does anyone know where this is located on the vehicle? Is this something I could do myself or should I take it in?
It is located in the rear diff. On the top, just slightly towards the driver's side, you will see an electrical connector on it......It is an easy job to replace, just one bolt holds it in, and the electrical connector....
Over the weekend I bought the speed sensor and tried to install it. I couldn’t find it anywhere on the truck. I got a book on my truck, and it told the location "if equipped". I looked in the location it stated, and it was an empty hole. Obviously it doesn’t have one. What could be causing this? I know there is another speed sensor that goes to the brakes. Could this be what is causing my speedometer to not work? Anyone know what else I should check?
In the book, and an illustration I got from the Ford dealer, it shows it to be at the end of the transmition where it meets the drive shaft. My truck has an empty hole there. However, there is a electronic part in the back diff, but it is a ABS speed sensor. Is this what I need? Maybe Advanced Auto Parts only carries the one I don't have equiped? The book shows the truck to have both sensors. The one is listed as "if equiped".
