Front driveshaft speed sensor location on '95
Is the rear sensor the same as the VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
Also my Chilton book refers to the GEM (Generic control module) as controlling the clutch in the transfer case. Does anyone know where the GEM is.
I'm desperately trying to solve my transfer case clutch problem
>location on a 1995 explorer with control trac 4wd.
Both sensors are located at the rear of the transfer case. The rear speed sensor is the upper sensor at the same height as the rear output shaft centerline, but perpendicular to it. The front is the lower speed sensor, again perpendicular to the front shaft. It looks like they both have three pin connectors.

It appears as though they're both the same from the manual, but it doesn't specifically say it.

Not sure, but try looking under the seat for an electronic box that has a 22 pin connector. Or, try to follow the speed sensor wires back to the GEM. Sorry I can't be much help on this one.
If it is the same place as an 98
its in the center of the I/P infront of your center console!
you have to remove the console to get to it.
The vss is on the rear dif.
may i make a suggestion ,forget those chilton manuals ,useless in my
opinon.get a manual from www.helminc.com or a subcription to alladatadiy.com .
I'm gonna chk my 92 manual to see if they changed anything in regards to
gem location.
There are no repairable parts in the gem its a replace item only.
have you ever changed the shift motor in this transfer case as well as the 2 sensors you are about to look at?

I'm Still having a problem locating the front speed sensor. My problem with the 4wd started happening after a local DR NICKS rebuilt the transmission. So I'm hoping the front speed sensor is not connected properly or is faulty.
The GEM is $285
and I'm also having a problem with my transmission where it's not shifting into third gear properly in the morning only. (for the rest of the day it's fine, Even when the car has been off for more than 10 hours) The computer is showing a 647 code (third gear failure)
The DR Nicks mechanic has had it back four times already and cannot find the problem (or duplicate it he says)
He's trying to get me to change the PCM ($another 300$)
All these computers are expensive!!!!
Thanks for the tip on the better manuals. (My friend has the ford dealers CD for this year, I'm going to borrow it for a while and try to figure things out myself)
