ABS sensor

Need some help guys. 1996 F250 4 wheel drive diesel. Today the ABS light pops on, so I do the easy thing first.Headed to Autozone and purchased a ABS sensor which mounts in the differential. Easy and no problem installing. Took it for a test drive and now the ABS light is still on and the speedometer is jumping back and forth. Cant even run the cruise because of the speedometer jumping so bad. Question is are there 2 speed sensors on this truck? One on the differential and possibly a vehicle speed sensor on the tranny. I climbed under the tranny to see if I could visually see a sensor. Honestly I didn't see anything on the tranny. I dont have a manual yet so IM guessing here. I only see the one sensor in the differential. Is that all or am I missing another sensor which controls the speedmeter. Im sort of figuring I got a bad sensor at autozone. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks maxx

All i can tell you is good luck. My speedometer has been jumping arround and acting up since i bought the truck. I too have replaced the sensor in the diff, checked grounds, ect. Im told It my be a PSOM (Programable Speedometer Odometer Module)but they only sell it with the entire guage cluster at the dealer now and its arround $350 dont rember exatly now but it was expensive. I havent had a chance to check the junk yards yet, and aint even 100% shure it is my problem. I'll keep an eye on this post, maybe what ever fixes yours will help me too.

Sometimes this will be a big mess to figure out. It changes from year to year. Has most to to with 2w/4w drive, 2w/4w abs, analog/digital (psom/ non psom) odo.

Check the transfer case. The case can have 2 sensors (high/low and speed). The sensor on the output shaft is speed. Its on the drivers side rear.

That will not fit a diesel. You need to ask for a RABS (Rear Antilock Brake Sensor) It sends a signal to the PSOM that makes the speedometer work. It's on the top of the rear differential. Sometime just rmoving it and wiping the crud off it will solve a jumpy speedo.

Does your OD lite on the end of the shift lever flash on/off? If so that sensor is you likely culprit. It may be the connector too. Look for corrosion or bent pins/sockets.

There also may be a problem with the ring gear in the diff i'd pull the over and inspect it...there shouldnt be anything wrong with it but you never know. It could have lost a tooth somehow...its what breaks the magnetic field for the sensor sending out a pulse in herts which the speedometer computer sends the signal to the speedo.

Cuda Jim, I have a diesel but this part I was talking about was for my 94' F250 5.8. I think I am going to try cleaning it as this might help. I see that the part is only $14 so if it doesnt work i will try replacing. No my overdrive light does not flash. Thanks for the tips.
