Howdy boys,
The other day I tried dropping the spare tire out on my 1999 Ranger but the little keyed lock thingy underneath the tailgate wouldnt budge. Is this a common occurance? If so, what would ya'll suggest to remedy this? I think some good ol' WD 40 might to the trick, but if that doesn't work then I need some other ideas that dont involve going to the Ford dealership (Theres something that makes me cringe when they told me to pay $90 for an unpainted fuel filler door)

If you can't get that thing unlocked you will have to probably drill it out then replace it with a new one, they cost about ten bucks, but if they don't work then they aren't worth it. Mine seems to be all right but you are right keeping it lubed might eliminate the problem. Silicone spray might also be an alternative. When I got mine the guy told me not to lose the key, it was hard to remove without it, so before getting out your drill, try any kind of solvent or lubrication. There might also be some other liquids from the gun shop that will work also. JUst my opinion.
Try graphite lubricant. I used some on a bolt siezed to a sleeve last week, and I'll tell you what! Less than a minute later, that bolt was unsiezed and sitting on the shop floor.
Spray it in the key hole, then let it sit for a bit. Then try unlocking it.
My truck came without a key for the tire lock. A big flat screwdriver and a hammer will get out in less than 5 minutes if all else fails. Just be real careful to keep from denting the metal or scratching the paint real bad. I did scratch mine up some, but a little touch up paint under the tailgate is alot cheaper than the dealership. I would definately try WD40 and/or the silicone spray, even soaking it a number of times over several days before trying to foce it out.
I tried to change my tire too for the first time and I could not find the key either. I didn't try using a screwdriver b/c I didn't know how I was suppose to turn it or what. Anyone know what a price would be for a new key for the spare tire?
I'd go into the ford dealership and DEMAND a key for free if you bought the truck from them. I'd be p-o-ed if i got a flat, and the dealership didnt give me a key for my lock!
I bought my truck used and it didn't have a key for the spare. The dealer said it would be cheaper to buy a whole new lock assembly for around $13 than it would to have a locksmith cut a key. I bought the truck used about a year ago so I think I may have lost my bargaining power to have the dealer pay for it.
i got my 10-year old truck last year and the spare had never been out from under the bed, i thought i should pull it to make shure it had enough air pressure, the eye bolt that screws trough the lug hole on the rim was so badly rusted that i twisted it off. its mounted in the bed now.
I went the the dealership and they said no way to order the keys. They have to drill it out and just put a different lock on it. I don't know why they said they would charge you. I was told no charge for mine. Just to go back another day b/c they were out of the bits to remove my lock. I guess it happens often
