I am new to this website but am amazed at the information available! It is great that all are willing to share their experience! Maybe someone can help with the following,
I am preparing to replace the IP on my 93 7.3 n/a. Will a regular open end 9/16" wrench work to remove the bolts or do you need the special ford tool or equal. Please help. Thanks
Jeff, I have an older truck but the pumps are physically the same. I use an assortment of 9/16" wrenches. Long, short, wide, bent---anything to reach. You'll need a 5/16", 12 point to get the 3 bolts that are under the front cover plate under the oil fill cover. I didn't have one in my assortment of wrenches and when I went to the auto parts stores the did not have them either. Ended up at a hardware store, and they had a 3/8" drive.
You'll need a 5/8" to remove the fuel lines.
Take 9/16" box end and grind it down so it is thinner than stock. Across the box end. You have to experiment. stop grinding when it will fit onto all 3 nuts. Use that to crack them, then an open end works fine.
when finished, tape your 5/16" 12pt socket to your "special" IP wrench and put them where you can REMEMBER. hopefully, you'll only get them out to loan to somebody.
