I am attaching a pic of the front of the camshaft in a 239 flathead and asking if anyone knows how to loosen the 4 bolts on the front to remove the camshaft. I cannot get a socket or wrench on them. Is there a special tool necessary to get these bolts out? Need to get these 4 bolts loose, (I guess) to remove camshaft on 239 flathead.
Clean off the grease on the bolt heads really well. I believe there are lock tabs around the bolt heads that need to be flattened an then you should be able to take a thin walled socket (a lot of the cheap sets are thin walled) or a thin walled box wrench and loosen the bolts. After the bolts are loose, just use the open end of the wrench to remove them.
I will check and advise, I was about ready to use some words like, shucky darn and golly gee whiz and a few other words that we don't need to hear. LOL

Definitely get a wire brush, a small chisel or whatever so you can expose the fasteners. The 1950s was not the good old days for engine lubrication. The stuff not so gradually turned itself into oil tar. It's why folks changed their oil like we change our socks today. The cheapest generic oil you could buy in a convenience store 40 years ago was space aged tech compared to old school oil. That is not an exaggeration.
