I have a 91 Explorer XLT ... the leather wrapped steering wheel is getting "mushy" in one area and "leaking" a black gooey substance onto my hand... yukkk. Guess I gotta get a new steering wheel ?
I also have a '91 XLT with the exact same problem. I have '92 XLT with the same type steering wheel and don't have this problem. Both have roughly the same mileage and wear and tear. I'll be very interested to see what sort of responses we get on this. To some people it may sound trivial, but it's not when you end up having to drive the vehicle with napkins on your hand!!!
I'm having the same problem with my 92 xlt 4x4 and was hoping for a solution (maybe some kind of sealant) from this forum. For now, I replaced the steering wrap with a solid wheel cover. At least that keeps the goo inside and off my hands.
Here's a solution I picked up elsewhere: Clean the surface well, and coat it with Duplo-Color vinyl paint. I picked up the paint at my local auto supply store (I think it was O'Reilly's), but haven't tried the fix yet. The paint comes in a spray can which would be difficult to use without removing the steering wheel. However, the person who suggested this fix said he sprayed some into the paint lid and wiped it on with a cotton cloth.
