cleveland heads

Rebuilding my 351c 2v after 5 years in hibernation and ran into a problem. It seems like both heads are identical. Is there a left and right? If so, how can you tell?

Cleveland heads are identical and interchangeable side to side. some late model M/400 smog heads have an air injection system that uses holes in the rear of the heads for a cross over tube. i heard a tip somewhere to set the heads on the block with no pistons in the holes to check for the best alignment of the chambers to the bores. when i did this i could definately see that the heads lined up better one way than the other. you also might want to "port match" the oil returns at the deck surface, they rarely line up very well.

I just installed them last night hoping for the best but did not know about port matching. I wish I would have known sooner. Thanks for the reply though. That realy gives me relief. I have been trying to build this engine as best I can but always run into little things that put doubts in my mind and bothers me for a long time. Now I will be thinking about port matching for a long time. I realy don't consider my self **** but always like to do things right the first time to save me some hazle and grief down the line.
