Water pump spacer?

Water pump spacer?
Part #D2SE 8A557, It came off of a 77 400(dont know what car originally).
I need to know what is its purpose? Just a spacer or does it have a purpose?
It looks like some sort of a "flow plate" to match up 2 parts that dont fit quite right.
If it is to help cool better, I plan to gasket match it and get the best cooling I can get,, Im gonna need it.
I asked this question once before but not for the same reason, someone please help me, or give me a link to something that might help.
