o2 sensor + other questions

i am gonna rebuild my 300 six in about a month and a half. it has over 150,000 miles, or 250,000 miles, not sure which, and it leaks oil real bad (1 quart every 2 to 3 days). The rear main seal is gone and the pan gasket is shot too. to replace both seals i know the engine needs lifted and a new pump needs put in. i figure while i lift it i might as well rebuild. my first question is i want a new o2 sensor since i have no idea when the last time it was changed. should i wait till i rebuild to buy the new sensor or can i just use a month old sensor in a fresh motor? I want to help this fresh motor breath good so i was thinking about either replacing or hollowing the cat. my friend said he can get me a new universal cat for 80 bucks, if i want the actual proper one it would be 300. what is anyones take on this, are the universals any good? how would a hollowed cat effect my gas milage and my 84 feedback carb? also do i need a friction addative for a "b" code axle?

If it was me, I would save the money you are going to spend on that o2 sensor and buy a non feedback carb from a 83 or older 300. Just my opinion. As for hollowing out the converter it should be OK as long as you dont have any emissions in your area. It should give you a little more power.

yes i have emmisions in my area, but its only a visual check. I want to keep the feedback cause if i am gonna do the work to switch a carb i am gonna go to a 4bbl and i don't have the money to do that now. how are the universal cats that are cheaper? will they screw up the feedback? will hollowing the cat screw up the feedback?

I dont know, it could cause your engine to run a tad bit leaner because you will be flowing more air into the engine when you remove the converter.

thats what i was thinking too, so i guess i won't go with that idea, plus if i ever get caught i would be in trouble. now i wonder what those universal cats are like?

Don't hollow out the cat. This will create additional back pressure on the engine.
It will reduce your low end torque.

If you put a universal converter on your truck you will have to fab up the air injection tube. If I were you I would put a factory converter on your truck, less headaches in the long run. As long as you have a muffler on your truck you should have enough back pressure to keep you from loosing low end torque.

I just bought my truck but haven't picked it up yet so I can't crawl underneath and look. Does an 80 have a cat?

I think most 77 and newer 1/2 ton trucks have catylytic converters. Look at your emission sticker under your hood, it will say catylyst or non catylyst.
