Air pump died today....

...so I installed a shorter belt to bypass. The belt length is 82" for those who want/need to know. I know this question has been asked, but I don't remember if it was ever answered.

Do you have AC on the truck?

that'll change belt size, but you know that already.

Yes, mine has AC. The ones I've seen without AC have an idler pulley where the compressor goes, so the belt is the same. I wasn't asking about the belt length, although after reading my post it does sound like that. I just remembered people asking what belt to get to bypass the pump. The stock belt is 98" or 99" depending on whose catalog you believe. Bypassing the air pump requires a belt 17" shorter.

What does an air pump do when it dies, seize up?
I'm not confinced removing stuff the engine was engineered for is so smart.

Mine would have siezed up in a few more miles. It starting rattling and spinning roughly yesterday. When I pulled it off and opened it up several chunks fell out.

If you look up some of my previous posts you will find that I don't like removing emmissions stuff just for the sake of removing it. However, I'm not convinced that all the stuff engines are designed to have is really necessary. Regardless, my thermactor system hasn't been operational for almost 5 years and ditching the pump was nothing more than removing dead weight. There are lots of systems on a vehicle that aren't worth the money to fix and this is one of them.

Thats the reason i don't want to take the head off the 300. It runs great, but i know if i take it off, a few chunks will fall out.

Thanks for the info Silver Streak. That'll probably help out guys looking to put body lifts on their trucks with the 300, i believe the lower rad house had clearance issues with the smog pump. Mine works fine, but makes a pretty good racket while doing so. I don't think its on its way out, just loud, it's been like that for a while. I guess I'll find out the hard way.

so the big question is, did u notice any gain? probaly not but good info on the belt. i might try this myself as my AIR system isnt hooked up due to stuff rusting and breaking.

PS: i have talked to someone who ran a shorter belt and said that it just ate the belt up over a time, just some food for thought to keep in mind...

Good to know... I stole an electric AIR pump out of a Saturn at the junkyard a year or so ago, and have wanted to get rid of that PITA pump and valve assembly for some time now. The new setup will be more antiseptic... low profile. Best part is, it won't run when not needed.

I did notice that the engine is smoother now, but not any power increase. I've run down the track with the belt completely off and gained less than a tenth; which is about 3hp.

My air pump has been making a lot of gurggling and popping sounds so after reading your post about the belt size and since my belt was squeeking anyway I replaced the belt and bypassed the air pump which did a lot to quiet down the engine. Thanks for the info on the belt size, saved me some work. I'm curious has anyone had any problems getting thru New jersey emissions with the air pump bypassed?

we have an 86 econoline 150 w/ 351w and the pump started rattling and finally siezed up. When dad took it to get it inspected they put a new belt on but it broke right away so they just left it off. Thank goodness for v belts. The mechanic said that gas mileage and power might increase a little bit without it.

I had an old Monte Carlo with a 4.3L. When the air pump seized on it I just removed it and all it's plumbing and still fast-passed emmissions testing.

I have heard that if you bypass stuff (shorter belt or rerouting) that it can screw up other things. Ex. your alternator bearing could go because there is a different stress on it now that it is not used to because the belt doesn't run over the pulley the same way. Just what I heard...
