Ok, I followed along with the last question about DSL troubles, ad tried all the suggestions. My problem is that the link light never goes off, but the DAT light will come on for the moment I send out info, but doesn't always respond to give me return info from the other computers I am linking to. My provider(a coop phone company, the only provider available that won't charge me long distance) says it is my computer, a new Gateway. However, it is always consistant in that the data light does not come on when I have trouble, or slightly flickers. If I continue to click on the task or page I want, sometimes it will work, and other times if I shut off the dsl box it responds for awhile, and other times if I unplug the phone cord, it responds, but mostly only for about 5-10 minutes. When it works, it works great. i'm not too impressed with my tech service though. They even had me shut down the firewall, claiming it was blocking. If it was blocking, wouldn't it be consistant? This problem has no rhyme or reason, no pattern. They say I am the only one on this d-slam, and that the cables to it are fiber optic. I used to have dialup, and it only ran at 26.4, but at least it was consistant and reliable but slow. They claim the reason for that was the switch at the box, which after they bought it (supposedly) the company they bought it from told them that it can cause trouble with dial up internet. So what should I be looking for, any ideas for me to try, and what should I be telling the provider, and keep from being snowballed by them? It takes hours to do what should take minutes, because I continually fight with it to just get the data stream to go. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
Four people at work have DSL from SBC. One could never get it to work and took the modem back. One has had no problems. The other two have had intermittent loss of service. I got cable.
When you start to have trouble you should ping the router, the name server, and the main server to see which one is dropping the connection. Your net card might be bad too. The ones built into the boards can be especially flaky.
Ok, I know basically what you're talking about, but I don't know what to do, I'm largely computer illiterate, so performing the tasks and diagnosing are out of reach for me.
