DSL Modem problem

I am having a big problem with my DSL Modem. The problem is that pretty much every day (mostly between 10 – 11:30 pm) my modem restarts itself. And then speed is very slow. Really slow, my old dial up seemed like high speed compared to this. So then I would manually restart modem (shut it down, wait 20 seconds and then turn it on again) and then it would work fine … until the next day when same thing would happen again.

This has been happening on and off for the past few weeks. I’m sharing my internet connection with 3 computers in my house.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been having this problems since very beginning (almost 2 years). It would give me problems for few days, then it would work fine for few months ...

But I'm getting tired of this.

The same time every day does not sound like it is on your end. I would be talking to your ISP tech help. Good luck getting beyond the 1st level of support.

DSL sucks, it seems like what is happening is that when they renew your ip it kicks you off. Something you may want to try is tell your provider to give you a static ip. It will cost more money shouldn't be more then 10 a month, but I am not sure that that will be your fix. If I were you I would try to get internet for the cable company.....

I had road runner for some time, but I didn't like it. I would lose connection pretty much every day and it was pretty expensive ($50).
With DSL I have a problem from time to time (like now), but for $22 per month (first year I got it for $12 per month) for this kind of speed - I can live with that.

I'm also having the same type of problem with my cable modem.

I just shuts down and then I'll have to unscrew the cable from the splitter,
screw the cable back to the splitter, unplug the power to the modem,
wait a few seconds then plug in the power back to the modem, and everything is fine,
until the next time it does it again, which is every few days or so.

Could it be my modem?

The problem with DSL is it uses the existing phone lines and you need filters..

It could be a bad filter which is causing noise on the line..

When it happens try disconnecting 1 filter at a timeto see if it clears up..

Do this before playing with the router/modem..

I had a customer with this problem.. It cleared right up after unplugging it..

As far as why it does it happen at the same time at night I don't know..

It could be one of the pc's scheduled to do something at that time.

Do you have a house alarm? My sister-in-law couldn't use DSL because it interfered with her alarm..

If it is random times during the day then you are right;think about replacing the modem. You should not have to unscrew the cable at all, just unplug the modem for about 1 minute. When it gets to be a daily job, I would replace it.

Yes, that seems like it would be your modem. I would get your provider to have a tech come out and look at things.

I also went through this with my internet connection. The local cable office printed out my modem stats when the tech came out and he suggested swapping the modem out which I did. He ran a couple of tests from my house while on the phone with the office and diagnosed the modem as having the problem.
I must say that I have to compliment my local CableOne office. They are quick to resovle any problems I have which lately, have been nil.

i had the problem also, (is yours a wireless modem), if so if you have a cordless phone that uses is close to or is 2.4 ghz it may be interference from chordless phone. just the dialtone would shut down my modem. may be worth checking out.

edit: even a close neighbors chordless phone could cause this.
