My son's 98 Ranger xlt (152K) crunches when going into 3rd gear unless you go really slowly then it slips in. What's up and how easy is it to fix?
It only does it in 3rd gear.
Shifting from 4th to 3rd is almost impossible to do without the crunch.
It feels like we're just chipping away at the teeth on it!
When was the last time the fluid was changed? I have seen several posts here on this forum about guys using synthetic fluid to ease shifting. If you are lucky, the fluid is just low and needs to be flushed/changed.
From your description, chances are the syncros are gone for 3rd gear. If that is true, then it is time to look at a new or rebuilt trans.
Sorry to hear that. It is always a good idea to check the clutch fluid levels. I am sure you probably did that already. And not likely if it is only 3rd gear. My vote is still the syncros or bearings. Either way it is inside the trans case, and unless you are a skilled trans mech (or know one).... I wouldn't go in there. I had to replace my trans a few months ago (afew gears grind and wirrrs). It finnally broke all the gears and I was not moving anywhere. The rebuild place I got my new one from said if the core was not in one piece (broke or not) I would get charged for the core. So, although I was very curious to look inside, I didn't for fear I couldn't get it back together.
It was about a $800 (and change) job. Ammco wants $2000-2500 for a 5sp rebuild.
