vin decode Number Dummy?

Well I don't see a Galaxie section but I need some numbers crunched. I'm on a quest for a posi 9 inch 3rd member to put to use in a 66 f-100. Now you know the reason for a galaxie question in the beloved slick section.

This is off the Galaxie 500 door plate
Body = 57c
color= m
Trim= 86
date= 15A
DSO= 61
Axel= 1
Trans= 4

Vin # 4D60x129360

There was a 64 fairlane 500 that I could not get the door open on. If I go back and manage to get it open, is there a axel code that would indicate a posi.

Finally: He had a couple of mercurys that I didn't even think of looking at. Any idea if mercury also offered a posi?

Walking around a salvage yard for me is like my wife going to the mall. I had a blast just looking. Also found a running 65 with a straight body, running 289 with auto trans, power steering and power brakes for $500. Might be worth it just to bring it home for parts or my next project.

Im gonna give this tag a crack...If Im not correct in any way, I know who will correct me...
VIN= 4 = 1964 model year
D = Dallas Assy. plant
60 = Galaxie 500XL 4 dr fastback
X = 352 4bbl engine
129360 = sequential build number

Door Tag... Body = 57C = Galaxie 500XL 4 dr H/T with bucket seats
Color = M = Corinthian White
Trim = 86 = Red Crush All Vinyl ( bodies 57C and 63C only)
Date = 15A = Jan 15, 1964 build date
DSO = 61 = Dallas
Axle = 1 = 3.00 open
Trans = 4 = C-O-M

Mercury did offer a posi(locking) rear end as well as Ford...telling them apart on the door tag from the handy book Im looking at is simple...posi rears on all FoMoCo cars on the door tag will be a letter, the open rear ends will be numbers.
The only thing is my source Im looking at isnt a FoMoCo book, but a fairly reputable source though, but it doesnt mention the 9" rear or anything specific like that unfortunately.

I hope this helps with most of your needs...how many of those 57C cars were built btw ???

One easy way to tell if it is a locking rear or not is to jack up the rear end and spin the tires. If they spin the same direction, it's a locking rear. If they spin the opposite direction, it's an open rear. If you get lucky and find a locking rear, you can figure out the ratio while you have the rear jacked up. Spin the wheel one revolution and count the number of times the driveshaft turns. For example, if the driveshaft turns 3.5 times for one wheel revolution then the rear is a 3.50:1
You can kill 2 birds with one stione that way.
1)see if it is a locking rear
2)determine what the ratio is

Just a thought

Thanks for the help guys. This is one of those salvage yards where you have to park at the front and begin your march. Don't know that I will be jacking up too many rear ends just for fun, lol. Not in this weather anyway. I like the hint about looking for a letter on the axel code. I'll probably drop in next weekend and look at the mercs and see if I can get that fairlane door open.

Don't bother opening that Fairlane door, you wanna know why?

Because....no Fairlane had a 9 inch rear end till 1966.

What's under there is an 8 inch rear end, the 9's little brother.

1966/70 Fairlanes with FE engines have 9 inchers, 1962/70 Fairlanes with 200 I-6's & 221/260/289/302's have 8 inchers. 1962/64 Fairlanes with 170 I-6's have a 7 1/4" rear end.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Axle code 1 from that 1964 Galaxie doesn't have a LS rear end, you wanna know why?

Because AXLE code 1 = Ford 9 inch / 3.00-1 / non Limited Slip

Cars: If the AXLE code is a number = No Limited Slip / If the AXLE code is a letter, it has Limited Slip.

Rear ends tags: Thru circa 1966, the ID tag itself won't show whether it has LS or not. All it'll have is a letter code like: WDM-A & the ratio (in most cases).

On 9" rear ends from this time frame, there's a separate tag with an L on it, if LS is present. This tag is at 4 o'clock, the ID tag is at 5 o'clock.

1967 and later, with LS, the ratio has an L as the second digit: 3L00, 3L25, etc.

Mercury's have the same rear axles as Ford use...but CAVEAT EMPTOR 1966/72 big Ford's, Merc's, T-Birds and Lincolns offered two 9 inch rear ends. One has a 9 3/8" ring gear = No workee in a 1957/67 F100.

If the car has a 428/429/460 (460: Lincoln only till 1972) engine, it will have this ring gear size, and this rear end was also optional on 390's.

Dunno if they were built "by the way" or not.... ....but in 1964: 14,661

And...make a notation in that gypo decoder book you are using. M = WIMBLEDON WHITE = 1964 and later...cars & trucks.

Well knowing that about the fairlane saved me from crawling around inside that thing. Two mercs to check and I'll be all done with that salvage yard.
