I have a 1986 F-150, 351W, C6 Auto, 4 x 4 without a factory tachometer. I was given a complete instrument panel with factory tach from an '85 or '86 diesel. Can the diesel tach be installed in my panel? I am hoping that it will install with minimal alteration to the wiring. I would imagine that the diesel tach was triggered from the alternator. Has anyone tried this before?
I have a '87 F250 diesel which uses a speed sensor to operate the tach. Since there is no ignition system in a diesel it's not hooked up the same, but I have heard that some are hooked through the alternator like you mentioned. Probably the best thing to do would look at some wiring diagrams to see the various options for a tach hook-up. Better still would be to ask a Ford parts counter person if the same tach is or can be used for either application. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
