My 86 F350 that I am currently bringing back to life is missing its factory tachometer and I am catching hell trying to find one, so I was wondering will a factory tach from a gas burner work or does it have to be for the diesel, also can the tach be placed in the cluster I already have or do I have to change the whole cluster for the diesel with a tach in it. Lastly if anybody has a diesel specific cluster with the tach I would be willing to buy it for a reasonable price plus shipping of course. Not a bad truck for $500 huh?[ATTACH]153145[/ATTACH
A gas tach will not work. It has to be the diesel one. You can use your same cluster if it is a non-tach, but you need to replace the circuit film that has the contacts for the tach. The film is not diesel specific and can be from a gas tach cluster. All 85/86 IDI's have the wiring already present, and the threaded port for the sensor in the IP gear cover. It is plug and play. You need the tach, the film and the sensor. I actually do have spare diesel tach and circuit film that I may part with...PM me for details. The sensors are still available new.
i second what F834 has posted.
and would like to add that a VDO aftermarket programmable tach is easy to wire into our trucks.
also,
check your IP gear cover to see if you have the provisions for the sender.
IIRC, trucks that didnt have a tach didnt have the gear cover to hold the sender.

In 1983/1984 there was no tach option for diesels. The gear cover had no port and there was no wiring in the harness. In 1985/1986 the tach became an option, and all trucks had the wiring and the port on the gear cover (plugged in trucks w/o tach). Since yours is a 1986 it should have the connector for the sender tucked somewhere by the IP and a plug in the sensor port.
Has anyone ever done the white face conversion on these gauges? I see they are available on ebay as well as different color led bulb kits. I am just curious of how hard it is to do and if it is worth doing. Thanks
There is a thread about this on the 80-86 forum (White Faced Gauges). The thread gets a little off track but don't forget to check the last couple of pages where someone did it on a diesel cluster. There are some good tips about what colors show up best at night etc., so it's worth the read. Personally I don't really care for white face gauges in our trucks, I think they look out of place. Just my taste though. I did, however, rather like what one member (First Today) did in his truck... He had a set of the rare brushed aluminum XLS bezels and he matched his gauge cluster in aluminum finish. If I wanted bright gauge faces this is the direction I would go:
The white face gauge thread also has an interesting write up by Ctubutis on how to change the color of the clock numbers, digital radio display, and HVAC controls to match the color he used for gauge lighting (red in his case).
