I'm curious if anyone else with a later model mustang is having problems with peeling paint. I have a 2002 GT and the paint has started peeling off the hood in several places. It's True Blue in color. Ford customer service basically told me tough, you are over 36K so your warranty is expired. I am wondering if this is an isolated problem with my car or something that others have experienced as well.
I love the car but the attitude from Ford was pretty depressing really. This was my first new Ford and I guess it'll be my last. I can't accept having to spend the money to strip and repaint a car that is only 22 months old.
Anyway, enough whining, has anyone else ran into a problem like this or is it just me?
i have a 99 V6 with a lot of mods. Its silver but its been garaged from day 1 and hardly driven in rain. Is yours left outside all the time or driven in harsh conditions? Also if you wax your vehicle a lot like i do and keep it clean it will be perfect
Peeling paint at 22 months is totally unsat. I'd be doing a dance on someones desk at the nearest Ford dealership! Todays paint is advanced enough to last at least 10 years in direct sun. Keeping a car in a garage to keep paint from peeling is unrealistic. (chuckle) If It were me, I'd be a boil on the dealerships behind till they fixed THEIR problem with paint!
I appreciate the feedback and link as well. My car has received the same care as my 2000-2001 GM products(regular wash and wax) and the paint on both of those is fine. As for the local dealer in Plant City, Florida, they told me "they have money set aside for situations like mine but since I'm not a loyal customer(the car wasn't purchased from them and they don't get to do all of the service work) I don't qualify for that". I was blown away by that statement. I bought the car shortly before moving here and do as much of the service work myself as possible. I had no idea I would be penalized for that down the line. It has been a frustrating situation to say the least...
Paint peeling off in 22 months is definitely not normal...I've never heard of this being an often problem or known problem with mustangs...or other ford cars/trucks. You might have been the lucky few that have problems like this...the paint on my 95 is almost like new...paint will last a long time...certainly longer than 22 months.
I've owned three Rangers, all bought brand new by me, all three had paint peeling issues. The '85 was blue, the '90 was maroon, and the '96 was white. The maroon was the worst, started peeling after about two years, on the hood first. Now I have a 2003 F150, we'll see. Ford has had this problem for at least the last 15 years, as the EPA forced all manufacturers to change the paint formulatuions for emissions reasons (solvent in the atmosphere). This caused adhesion problems between the primer and the color coat. I think your best bet is to go to Ford directly, through the zone representative perhaps. In my case, I worked through the dealer I purchased the truck from, and Ford covered the repair, for the hood and the roof. But, when the door started peeling after the warranty expired, the fix was on my dime. Then I sold the truck! By the way, all the domestic companies have the same type of peeling issues, the only cars that don't seem to peel are ones built in countries that don't have our burdensome regulations.
Hi. I, too, have a 2003 Ford Mustang Convertible with paint peeling and paint issues. Ford basically said the same thing to me, although they did agree to repaint the hood only as a "courtesy" to me but I had to pay 20%. My husband & I have found 20+ Mustangs with the same problem--2002-2005. Two of the cars we found had already been repainted by Ford under warranty 2 years ago and are already peeling again. Our insurance company sent an adjuster and he consulted with another adjuster and they both agree that most of the damage is definitely factory. Four of the 20+ are True Blue--a popular color according to Ford that was discontinued last year. My dream car is now a nightmare! Anyone with the same problems on a Mustang, please feel free to contact me. Still fighting with Ford on this issue.

Reason: Message too short
Ask several dealers, nicely. I had a 1984 Toyota with peeling paint after the warranty and the closest dealer said no. Another dealership repainted it for free. Since I do my own oil changes, etc, niether dealership had ever seen me before. Some dealerships have a better relationship with the manufacturer and can get them to pay for more things.
Oddly, that truck was built in Japan, so it should not have been a water-base paint like used in US factories. GM has been using it the longest (since '73) and seems to have finally perfected it. My 1994 C1500 was never garaged and had no paint problems for the eight years we owned it.

Should take it into ford and flop around, just ask them if it would make any difference if it was an SVT product, because my fellow cobra owners that have been having this problem having been getting them repainted without much of an issue (at most dealerships) check out other mustang sites like svtperformance.com and do a couple of searches. Its a common issue, and it seems that the mustangs are extremely common.
