I am in the infancy stages of remodeling a bathroom that is about 30 years old. It has a 3 piece fiberglass shower enclosure that has been assembled once in the room and now cannot be separated. I should say that it won't fit back out through the door now that it's one big piece. I will have to cut it up to get it out. I have already removed all fasteners and disconnected drain and faucet connections. What is the best way to cut fiberglass that will make the least mess and put the least amount of dust in the air (it's in a master bedroom)?? I own a rotozip, saws-all, jigsaw, circular saw, and any kind of hand saw. I tried the rotozip for a little, but didn't have great luck, it could have been I didn't have the right blade in it. Also, I planned on wearing a respirator. Does anyone have any advice / experience to share? Thanks in advance.
Run a length of masking tape or duct tape along the cut you are gonna make, use a fine tooth blade on a sawzall or circular saw. Cut through the tape. it cuts down on the dust and splinters. Also if you have some to hold a shop-vac near the blade thats a plus too.
I'm sure you know the lawsuits over this stuff... and I'm pretty saddened to have worked as a young man with fiberglass...
BE SURE and get a first class respirator - that fiberglass dust is LETHAL...
Suggest turning the a/c down to "freezer" setting, waiting a bit til it's coold in there...
Wear long sleeves, gloves, all skin covered... to keep that stuff out of your pores....
then as soon as finished - take coverings off in such a way as tio limit the dust in the air and rinse the clothes off outside before washing...
Take a slowly running shower as soon as possbile to get any dust off you...
Some like HOT water to open the pores and allow the dust to wash out, some like lukewarm to NOT get the pores open too much to allow the dust to go into them !!!!
Can u tell I don't like that stuff ???
Should've seen me when I was doing the zoodad mod on my truck !!!!
If you have it off the wall in one piece, cut it apart with sheet metal shears. Even tree limb loppers would do. It would make less of a mess then cutting it with a small tooth blade.
As others have suggested, tape the cut, then set the blade a bit less then the fiberglass thickness and cut away. Just hold the saw with two hands and make sure it does not kick back.
