Well, the BIOS loads before windows does. The BIOS is the first part to load, it's the mediator between hardware and software (there's TONS of information about it online). If you can get into the BIOS, then they keyboard does in fact work, and all you need is a healthy format of the drive. If you can't get into BIOS at all, then the keyboard doesn't work.

What you may want to do is take it into a CompUSA or local computer shop in the morning, walk up to the clerk looking like a jerk and say <cocky>I'll give you $5 if you can get into the BIOS.</cocky> (That's pronounced BY-Ohs, by the way) Then when they do it, get them to tell you how. It may cost $5, but considering how much most places charge for that kind of rubbish, that's not such a bad deal. Heck, you could even *bet* him $5... that way, if your keyboard doesn't work, at least you have $5 more than you used to...

It sounds like pretty much everything is covered here... I'll second what people are saying about getting into the BIOS. Anyway, I think replacement keyboards run between $80 and $100 but I'd try unplugging the ribbon cable and plugging it back in to see if that brings it back to life before replacing anything.

Odd to say the least !
Dunno , id backup the HD and reformat before id bring it for a check.

The hacker thing i don't buy , don't make sense , usually a hacker , if he /she got root would install a key logger so as to "catch" all your key commands , and that would be little use if you keyboard was not workin...

Me i think the viruses that you have/had may have screwed with your computer .......

To back up your HD on your laptop , you need a CD burner on the laptop, or a million floppies !!!

Or you could network it with you other computer, makin sure your other computer is AV protected and fully up to date ... or you can get a cable that will allow you to take out your laptop HD and slave it to the master HD of your other computer .. if you can do that then you can scan it from there for a virus ..

If you have a virus then it will try to disable to AV software , so putting it as a slave and doin the scan there can sort that out ....

Or a USB drive , you can get them pretty cheap now they hold quite a lot so you could load your files and dump them on the other computer a bit at a time ..

Then reformat and reload the OS again , me bet's the keyboard will work !!!

Hey i could be wrong i usually am !!!! :-)

Good luck dude !!

Kinda sounds like what happend to my other drive with win2k on it. At first after running ad-aware it worked beautifully booted fast and everything else like it was a fresh install.

A few reboots later, i wasn't getting anything as far as connecting to the net itself, and my software firewall was OFF, and wouldn't restart.

Im on a cable connection and when i boot linux it doesn't do that, so its obviously a windows issue.

Now just to get the drive to come back up. (It tanked apparently.) And reinstall windows.

I don't really miss it much, but there are a few apps that linux just can't hack right now.

After you get your system up an running again, goto radioshack or order this online...www.alphashield.com. Nothing gets thru it unless you invite it in. Period.
