Diesel tachometer
Sometimes while stopped at a light and the engine is idling at about 700 rpm, the tach will drop to about 400 rpm momentarily but the engine speed never changes. Is this just a bad sensor? Can it be cleaned or does it need replacing? Is it an easy job to change out? Or could it be the gauge itself?

It could be either. The sender is located on the timing gear for the injector pump. It has two wires comming out of it. Check the sender and make sure it is not loose. Also check the wires and the conector. The sender works like a magnito sensing the teeth on the timing gear. If you pull it out, make sure the surface around the sender is clean as too not allow any dirt to fall into the gears. A little sand could be very destructive to the gears.
