I'm posting this 'cause I'm confused. What is the correct RPM for my engine (see signature)? I see guys talking about 500 RPM in drive and 700 or 800 at idle. I thought it was supposed to be 1000 at idle, and 750 in drive.
TIA,
Munrow
I remember seeing somewhere, more than once, a vehicle's timing instructions saying to set it @ 900 RPM, max. I also saw, somewhere, where it said ideal RPMs were as mine are now. Can't remember where/when I saw it. Think it was when I first got started working on this vehicle, and didn't even know where/what the timing marker was.
Seems like it would be more fuel efficient at lower Rpms, also. Probably won't matter, can't keep my foot out of it, anyway.
Thanx,
Munrow
The reason for the 900 rpm max when setting timing is to ensure that the mechanical advance in the distributer hasn't kicked in yet. If you try to set the timing at too high rpms then the mechanical advance will begin to advance the timing and if you set the timing with it advanced then the base timing will be too low.
