Coolant change for 6.9
LAST EDITED ON 22-Sep-00 AT 11:30 PM (EST)[p]I have been hearing alot about the head gaskets and how it seems they are so sensitive.
My 86 6.9 w/120k on it that I bought a few weeks ago has really dirty coolant and I want to change it soon.
Is there any reason to worry about affecting the head gasket with a flush and fill and is there a coolant brand or additive that will help keep the head gasket in good shape.
I feel as though the DIRT may be holding it together.
Thanks.......AlanT

I really dont think that the dirt is holding your engine gaskets together, as these motors have up to 300 plus pounds of compression. I would defently flush the system out very good, I would remove the thermostat and flush out the block and replace the thermostat with one from ford or international. Use a good quality coolant with low-silicate formula for use in diesel engines. International sells Fleetright and add the DCA-4 additive as required.
