Rick , my best friend is a die hard chevy gas guy, and he hates diesels. He tries and tries to convince me why gassers are better.
But when I ask him to prove the facts, all he can come up with is "diesels stink and they're loud".....
Thats the reason I have that sticker on my rear window...
Hell it's almost as old as my truck LOL. I'll say this though- my buddy has a crew cab F-250 shortbed with 265's on it, and a V-10 with 250k on it. While it can squeal the tires if I stand on it at a light (my dually won't) it has no friggin get up and go power. Yes I have mods and that's probably the difference, but after driving his V10 I will never own one, even if I don't tow a single thing. I just like the SOTP torque that a diesel offers, and you will never be able to build a V-10 to make the same numbers you can with a 7.3 given the same amount of cash.
I didn't realize this thread is older than my dog.....
It surprised me when I seen the title after the other thread, so I looked and seen the date and WOW. I knew we didn't need that in here so I gave him the stupid thread in that other forum.
There is only one answer that matters, and oddly enough, it's a question: Can V10 guys say "I make over 1000 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels, AND get over 22 mpg"?? I can say that with my 7.3L PSD.....

I love the sweet smell of diesel, especially when the heater catches a bit of it during winter and blows it in the cab Can your gasser buddy get 20mpg cruising the highway at 75?

He had (sold it) a 03 chevy 3500 with the 8.1 gas. I've never seen one get better than 11 mpg.
He claims he got 20 on the highway and 15 in the city.......
Funny how his wife told me they replaced the 8.1 dually with a 5.3 half ton to save on gas. (Psssst....my diesel still gets better mileage than your 5.3...)
I hope the gas guys don't catch a whiff of this thread, because then they're gonna come on down the forum and start harrasing us here on our home turf LOL. Aside fom the initial cost difference of two new trucks, I can't see a reason to buy a V-10.
I've had a 2003 Excursion with a V10, and now have a 2003 Excursion with a 7.3.
The V10 runs well and accelerates pretty well. It's quiet, and you almost have to be a banker to afford fillups because they come SO FREQUENTLY... we averaged around 8.5 mpg around town and managed to bump up to 14.4 a couple of times on long highway runs (1,000+ miles).
The 7.3 is louder, accelerates OK (it's bone stock), but I get around 14-15 mpg around town and have done those same 1,000+ mile runs while getting around 18 mpg (I drive around 80 mph on the highway). I also know I can run this 7.3 for much longer than I could with the V10. I also get to stock a single set of spare parts because they fit both engines (the Excursion and my F250).
I'll try and break things into pros and cons
Gas- con- high fuel consumption, especially when pulling, not much torque in reserve for mountains.
Gas- pro- quieter, cheaper oil changes 7qts, but more often
Gas- con- needs "tune-ups", ie plugs, especially when towing, may need more than at factory recommended changes. On the v10, they are a bitch to change
Diesel- pro- better mileage, much more torque at lower rpms.
Diesel- con- noise, if you don't like it, more expensive oil changes up to 16 qts, at longer intervals though
Diesel- pro- has only fuel and air filters to change as required.
Diesel- pro- normally will outlast a gas motor under severe usage.
For any kind of serious towing, I'd get a diesel powered truck, the extra power, better mileage and the longer service intervals are a major plus.
