i have a 429 with comp 292 cam ,825 demon open headers, stealth int , msd ign, stock 460 dis.heres my problem moter will not idle with less than 1100 rpm and 24 deg timing, with timingt set thier when i hook up vac adv it goes rite to 38 deg, then rev it up to 2500-3000 over 50 deg this is too much. heres my question shoud i get rid of vac adv? also i have heard of locking mech adv at and setting the timing were it should be36 - 38 deg , how do i lock it? engine is in mud racer that needs nothing but wide wide open thotle performance , also should it idle at less than 1100 rpm ? cam specs are- dur@50 244 244 lobe sep 110, gros lift 560- 560, dur at .006tappet lift292-292 cam is instaled str up
tess,
I have the exact setup with the exception of the distributor/carb.. I run a mallory -w-18 deg initial and 38 total. I agree 50 deg is alot. I have a friend that locked out his dist.by spot welding the advance. He loves this setup for drag racing but you have to get a box for the msd to retard for starting.
With that big of a cam the carbs not getting a decent vacuum signal but it should still idle lower than 1100. I have a holley 750 and have the idle set at about 950

Did you degree the cam and if you did was the timing mark correct when at TDC. Is your balancer new or old? Old ones can slip therefore giving you false timing #'s. When I setup my engines I like the distributor to have about 26 degrees of curve in them, that way you can have an initial of 12 degrees and a final of 36 degrees total advance between 2800 and 3000 rpm. The lockout deal has never worked very good for me except in blower apps where you dont run much total advance (around 26-28 degrees) becuse of detonation under boost.
Double check your marks and make sure your cams degreed right. Hope that helps.
