Front disc's won't bleed???

Ok, tried to bleed my brakes today as they were a little mushy. All I can get out of the front calipers is a dribble at best and the fluid is rust colored. The backs shot a full stream of fluid as did the blocking valve. I can only assume that my calipers are bad (clogged) and need to be re-built or I need to get new ones. Anyone ever have this problem? Any advice?
Thanks,
Larry

Sounds like you may have the dreaded poo-poo in the fluid. Try to completely remove the bleeeder instead of just loosening it. This may help get some big chunks out. I would definitely recommend rebuild/replace calipers and flush brake lines if you have rusty colored fluid. There may be water in your fluid. It turns to steam when you heat the brakes up and the steam acts just like air in the system (mushy pedal).

The interesting thing is that the fluid that came out of the rears and the blocking valve was clear. It is just the calipers that had rust colored fluid.

Maybe it has something to do with higher loads and temperature on the fronts? Brake fluid is hygroscopic (it will accept water readily) use several small containers instead of one big one. If you don't use all of a container it will get moisture in it from the humidity in the air. I won't keep a partial bottle for more than a week or so.

I assume by smaller bottles you mean of brake fluid? I have not added any until this bleed session. I opened a brand new bottle.

Yes- smaller bottles of brake fluid. If you open a 32 oz bottle and only use 2 oz to top off a master cylinder, then the other 30 oz will sit around forever. The longer it sits, the more moisture it will absorb. You could waste 30 oz, or even worse put bad fluid into your system. If you're going to buy a big bottle, use it soon. I buy big ones to flush with but I always keep little ones around to top off with.

By the way did you get it to bleed yet?

My ART rotors and pads are on their way and should be here on Monday. I am planning to get started on Tuesday changing them out. I am considering ordering the flex hoses someone mentioned for the back if I think I can get them here in time. Stil have to check on that. How much brake fluid should I have on hand when I get started with this? I would like to completely flush/bleed all the old brake fluid out and replace it with new brake fluid. Also, I am sure it is listed in my manual at home, but I'll go ahead ask here, exactly what brake fluid do I need to get?

I dont remember where i heard this, but ive heard somehting about a proportioning valve being stuck and that would mean that you would not be able to bleed front brakes. If you jack up the front of the truck, apply service brakes and try to rotate the front wheels, do they rotate? If they do, youre not getting any pressure to the front brakes. If they dont rotate, they you probably have gunk in your system, esp at the bleed screw.

You are right. Now that you said that I remember having that problem before. If a proportioning valve is tripped you will lose either front or back brakes. Good possibility.
