Question... had a strong fuel smell going uphill when I had to put my foot on the pedal a little more to get that last jump in shifting. Also got it coming downhill... I think it was associated with downshifting to second gear.

And, no, the engine's not missing a beat... and going uphill with all that weight would be one hell of a physical feat if I was pedalling... I'd hate to see the legs on man or woman that could do that! :0

I'd look at the stuff Torque1st mentioned. I don't think it would involve the engine itself, since it's running good. Maybe you could park it on a slope and see if something's leaking.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to look at it again tomorrow. I'll see what I can see then.
So far it sounds like this might not be something terribly big to fix. I'd called a couple of mechanics and they each told me it could be something small or quite big... basically they were baffled.
