hello dieselers- I have an idea that I need some help on. As gasoline prices begin to rise again, this makes perfect sense to me. I've got an escort diesel, 1984, 2 litres, 5spd. It can get almost 50 mpg, but the body is failing fast. It is my understanding that ford put these together from Mazda parts. I also have an '84 bronco 2, 2.8 liter, 5 spd. The bronco body is good and the drivetrain is okay but the engine tossed a rod. Wouldn't a diesel bronco 2 be just the coolest thing?! I'd have 4wd without having to get out the bigger truck, better mileage than other little 4 wheelers. I believe that the five speed in the B2 is also from mazda. What I'm wondering is what is the bell pattern on the back of this little diesel? does it match any other fords? do you think the 2 liter is strong enough for the B2? Ford used to sell diesel rangers, is that engine similar to mine? Good idea? DF

Dinosaurfan, looks like you have to do some measuring count the bolts in the bell and measure them then check the bronco II I have never heard of a diesel escort but if the swap works it would be different to say the least!!!! should still get fairly decent mileage but it won't be fast you are going to be pulling alot more weight than an escort. DF. My uncle had one of the Escort Diesels. About an 85...
My little Brother in law had an 87 Bronco II.

Having spent time driving both, I'd say forget the Diesel in the Bronco II.

The Escort Diesel was about as Powerfull as the VW Diesel.
Just my opinion.

Isn't the Escort engine sideways, front wheel drive setup. Whereas the Bronco II isn't? Not positive because I dont own either, but just thinking.

i have heard of a diesel escort in a parts book never actually saw one tho i bet they did get good gas mileage just like the vw diesel bunnies lol mazda made a diesel b2200 or whatever their system is in the eighties so maybe it would fit gutless tho but who cares, gas aint that expensive to sacrifice power tho

I had an 85 VW Jetta Turbo Diesel for a while. little thing would run right along pretty good.Best milage I ever got was 61 on a trip to Vermont From Upstate New York. Wish I had kept that little thing now fuel being high as it is.

I guess it already does. They are going for way more than they are worth in my opinion though. I will just stick with my truck I guess
