I have been helping my friend with her 92 explorer, which has been idling poorly. I don't know much about this car so bear with me. Sitting in park, the idle jumps up and down occasionally(other times it seems normal) and there is hesitation when hitting the gas. It will occasionally idle so far off that the car stalls(happens more in reverse. What things should I look for? I am under the impression that little preventative maintenance other than the standard oil change has been done. Rebuilt engine has about 90,000 miles on it. I need to know what to check, how to check them, and where they are located. Im more used to working on simpler vehicles...like my 69 f-250...so Ill need a bit more explaining.
At 90K miles on the original spark plugs (assuming new plugs were installed with the rebuilt engine), I'd start by cleaning the IAC valve (as suggested) and going through the basic tune-up stuff (air filter, spark plugs, wires if needed, fuel filter, etc.)
IAC valve is the cylindrical item that bolts to the side of the upper intake.
As one piece of advice, I'd suggest a Chilton's/Haynes manual, too. May be able to access one at a library, or you can access the same information using the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com
