Has anyone removed the seatback from the seat bottom? I need to work on mine and don't know the procedure to seperate the back from the bottom. Can anyone tell me the steps to do this?
I've got two problems. First is the arm rest has come loose inside the seat back and will droop. If I try to turn the nut/bolt it just spins. The second is that sometimes the seat back will just recline without the release button being pressed/pulled. I'm afraid that it will come loose while I'm driving and I end up looking at the ceiling. It's done it a 2-3 times so far but not while I'm dirving only getting in the van to go.
i've taken my seats out, and apart when i thought i was gonna recover them. it seems to me that it has a torx or allen wrench bolt on each side. i did get mine apart, but it took alot of persuasion on those bolts . i didn't look at the arm rest or recline mechanism though. maybe you could get new hindges at the junk yard ? good luck ......91 aero xl. ext grey with grey with grey interior. rick
Hey Tom,
Good to hear from you again. So, these automatic recliner seats, are they a German option not available to us in the 'states? Maybe you have them wired into your radar detector in the 'low visibility mode'.......... Nasty problem you have there Tom, hopefully you can switch parts from the passenger seat to the driver's. Good luck buddy!
Back in the states? I live in Georgia. Like Southeast US.
Hey, Maybe I've seen you at Grand Central Mall way back in the 70's. To see a movie we had to go to the mall there or out back of Gallipollis OH towards Rio Grand. I think we were about 50 miles from the mall. Small world.
Sorry, I had you confused with another Tom who is currently stationed in Germany. He drops in occasionally, hence the German reference. Well, we could have crossed paths at some point in the past. We had some fun autocrosses at the GC Mall. Point Pleasant was a nice town, as long as you stayed off the Silver Bridge. Did they ever rebuild that?
Been across the old Silver Bridge many times as a child (9 years old). Remember when it fell too. They built the Silver Memorial Bridge just a mile or so south of the old one. My family still lives about 15 miles north of Point Pleasant so I still go through the area a couple of times each year.
I even went to GC mall last Christmas with my in-laws. The old bird cage at one end was gone though.
I hate to leave threads hanging so I'll fill you in on the outcome. My newer Aerostar (96) developed a problem a few days ago. The passenger side seatback just seem to have no support and would lean back. Turned out that the seat bottom fame had a crack/split down the left side just in front of the seat back lever.
So I went to the You-Pull-It junk yard. Only a dollar to get in. Got a pair of seats from a 97 (I think) for $20. A great deal. I single bucket seat goes for $20 but a pair from the same car is also $20. From different cars it's $40. Go Figure.
Took the passenger seat apart and swapped seat frames. Had to swap over the lumbar support as the new one didn't have that feature. Works great.
Now back to my original problem. The driver's seat in the 94. I just took the seatback loose from the seat bottom (after it was removed from the van). It was two bolts on one side and a Torx bolt on the other. I had to take a hacksaw to the arm to get it off. It took a while to figure out how but I removed the cover. I found that on the left side there are two bolts that hold the seatback frame to the seat adjustment mechanism. The top bolt had sheared off. Also the nut for the armrest had come loose inside the seatback. Took the lumbar support balloon and installed it on the new seatback and replaced my cover.
The only problem so far is, the lumbar support hose is not on all the way. It doesn't seem to pump up. I'll have to take the seat out again for that. But the armrest now works and the seat does not go back unexpectedly. Much safer to drive.
