Say can anyone tell me why the intake gaskets should fail on
my 76 f-150 with 360 . has a aluminum edelbrock performer 390 intake.
it looks like the gasket became pitted and lost surface material . the trouble
surfaced with noticing pressure burp past radiator cap. ( odd noise ) gaskets
were fel-pro . cooling system had creamy crud in it,,, but never lost prestone
or seen any in crankcase . am now replacing head and intake gaskets .
is the aluminum a poor material to use for intake manifold ??
havent seen any cracks in the heads .
i am trying out another brand of gaskets
EDIT :
ALSO,,,, the gasket failure was the side ones ,, not the front or back
gskts. specifically beside the thermostat .
Don't mean this as a put-down, just maybe gasket failure was caused by installation error.
If surfaces weren't really clean, too much RTV used, not enough set time allowed, too much set time allowed before mating both parts, not getting parts lined up properly, warped parts, over-torquing on installation, torqued in wrong sequence, etc.
Not attacking whoeverever put it together, problems/errors do happen, and beyond faulty parts, these would be the areas I'd look first.
Not a thing in the world wrong with aluminum parts you speak of.
Your original thread was moved to the FE engine forum because it is NOT 73-79 specific.
It is an engine related topic.
This thread will be moved there also.

Fel-pro has a 1-800 tech support line, you'll have to do a web-search for it... the few times I have talked to them they are very professional. RTV should never be used on intake gaskets... gasoline dissolves it.
When I was toiling thru multiple problems with my 410 build, I had it apart 4 different times. The Edelbrock-recommended FelPro 1247 intake gaskets were a consistent problem around the ports (I have Edel heads and intake) due to them curling up and squishing out. So I finally went with the regular gasket with metal reinforcement, and no sign of a problem since. Many of the guys on the FordFE.com forum like the Mr. Gasket #202A for the low- medium riser heads, but haven't had the need to try them yet. Steve
I went from stock 2bbl to an Edel Performer 390 - used the stock bolts and had an intake gasket leak. Turns out stock bolts were too long and just barely bottomed out in the head. Check the bolt length vs the depth of the hole...
Rusty,
I built a 302, 15 years ago and used an Elderbrock Performer. I used Fel-Pros and stock manifold bolts. I had oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil. I reinstalled and reinstalled. I got it right about the third or fourth time. I think the aluminum manifold is prone to deformation under factory torque settings and it deforms the softer aluminum manifold. Did elderbrock recommend different torque settings than factory settings?
I'll bet they did,

The edel manifolds only get 25 ft lbs instead of 35. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong as I am going off memory. I am done with the printoseal felpros (1247s). I just bought some Victor Reinz gaskets from napa. They are supposed to work great. I have yet to install them though. The part number is NGA95159SG. They are $33 but seem to be very durable. I think the felpros are made for people who have their intake off every other weekend. They seem to work great for a short period of time. I will take pictures when I get mine off.
Thanks for everyones input . I noticed pitted area on aluminum around
coolant jacket that could also be culprit ,,, along with bad area on side gskt.
by the thermostat . Dont know what caused pitting on aluminum surface ?
This is right beside a intake port . But havent figured out how that could cause
pressure into cooling system . Engine had about 45,000 miles on it since rebuild
. I am trying out victor rentz gaskets and dug out a old cast iron 4bbl intake to
use . WAS there a coolant spacer block between cast iron intake and carb or
just a thick insulator gasket ?
