I am curious about installing the y-pipe I just got. there were no directions with it. It seems pretty simple, but there is a thin pipe coming into the y-pipe from above, looks like some emmisions control thing. It is pretty much rusted (practicaly welded) on. the kit comes with some hose and a clamp, it seems like it's designed to be used on that pipe, as in cut it and connect with the hose. Also the 2 bolt on each flange at the headers are REALLY stubborn, I fear I'll rip them off, if I can get the leverage I need to turn them. This is on a 302 96, I think there is one extra O2 sensor in the mix i will take care of later. Any imput?
Yes, the pipes look good and solid, but I'm ****ed. unless I misuberstood something, I thought this pipe bolted to stock manifolds, it doesn't. It's designed for headers. I am laying down 170 to have this installed, and modified to fit the manifold flanges and width of the piping in general, along with a bung. This system wasn't cheap (cat-back, y-pipe only), and now the price with shipping is over $900 dollars, jeez. I feel like I should have gotten a shop to do a dual flowmaster cat-back for 350. This better give me some serious power, lol. It looks like a good product, but I am going to call Bassani and see what they can do, this was supposed to fit unless I missed something, and I don't think i did.
Not to rub this in, but I just installed the Bassani Y pipes on my 1990 Bronco with 351w. It fit perfect with shorty smog headers.
The pipe that connects the two - with a bung fitting is for an o2 sensor and the tube coming out the CAT is for the air pump. (CA emissions stuff) You do not need the o2 sensor if you are not running one now, and the tube can be plugged as well.
As far as the pipes not fitting, call Bassini directly and see what the deal is. they should fit! If not, then you may have gotten the wrong part. They make them for 302's and 351's. The difference between the two in width is about 2 1/2 inches.
Instead of paying shop to mod the stock manifolds, look for some shorty headers on Ebay. May cost you a lot less and you will feel/hear the difference.
I got mine from proficientperformance.com and they were more than helpful. instead of paying all the money to modify, check all your bases. Muffler shops can be expensive when it comes to mods! Good luck
Sounds like I may have gotten the 351 pipe. I'll call them up. I had little choice though, this is my daily driver, and the y-pipe was cut off. I now have only the y-pipe on, and man, I can seriously feel some grunt, I can chirp the tires like I could never have before, and on the highway it's significant. It seems like a good system, but this crap still cost me too much.
I had exactly the same problem on my 91 afew months ago. I bought the right pipe and cat back and had all kinds of problems. Bassani fixed the cat back problem asap. The y pipe was another story. THe y pipe would not match up to the manifolds. it was off by maybe an inch or so. I checked all part numbers and measured the bassani pipe against my stock one and they were different, then i called bassani and checked against a pipe they had there and it was the same. They didn't really give me any useful advice. I bought those rings also and they didn't help. If you want gice them a shot. I will sell them cheaper then if will cost you to buy them from bassani or PP, they are unused. I called the place I bought them from and explained the whole deal. they agreed to refund my money and have fedex pick up the pipe. I waited for about 5 weeks and fedex never came and i got "I don't know whats going on" from bassani and proficient performance. I accepted that i was stuck with the pipe and figured i would pay to get it fixed, but i decided to roll the dice. I wanted the bassani headers too, so i called them up and told them i would keep the pipe if they would give me a discount on headers. I got the headers and did the install and the y pipe fit the headers perfectly. the system is great, but i am still a little bitter about the y pipe not fitting the manifolds and how much of a run around bassani gave me.
