my 93 explorer sport just failed the o2 portion of the emissions test,
i was able to pull the codes and got 185 (M-mass air-MAF- output lower than expected, fuel control) and 186 (M- Injector pulse width longer than expected or mass air flow lower than expected, fuel control)
also occasionally the check engine light comes on and it has a rough cold start.
I think its the Mass Air Flow sensor, does anyone know how to check it or have a different opinion
See if you can get rid of both codes by cleaning the MAF. Take a look a the "Technical information sticky" at the top of the Ranger forum, theres a link to cleaning the MAF.
thanks, I finally got a set of tamper resistant torx (nice driver set from sears about 20.00) and cleaned out the MAF like in the Ranger posting, its been 24 hours and no lights have come on and also the start was smoother. I'll take it back for the emissions test this thursday
first inspection HC mine 1.3587 the standard 2.0
..........................CO 14.8120.................60.0
..........................NOX 2.9645................. 2.7
.......................CO2 364.5388 no standard
second inspection after cleaning the MAF
HC mine 1.1433 the standard 2.0
CO 9.2065..................... 60.0
NOX 2.8836....................... 2.7
CO2 409.6670 no standard
I found a leak in the exhaust in pipe between the muffler and catalytic converter so replaced that in hopes maybe it was the good exhaust that was leaking
third try
HC mine 1.1058 the standard 2.0
CO 13.1306...................... 60.0
NOX 3.4529........................ 2.7
CO2 447.6452 no standard
and I was so close, any ideas or should I give in and take it to a shop?

Reason: clarity
the only codes were the ones that directed me to the MAF, see first post, also the check engine light would come on sporadically but since cleaning the MAF there are no check lights coming on, it starts up smoother and seems to run better and yes its only the NOX holding me back
Check your EGR valve/controls if you have it. By recirculating exhaust gasses into the intake manifold EGR system reduces NOX emissions. I've read here that early '93's have internal EGR system(?) I'm not too familiar with 1st generation X's.
Not all '93's have EGR systems. If you do have an EGR system, it would be a good place to start.
Note that, just because the check engine light doesn't come on doesn't always mean there are no codes in the computer. I'd still run the self-tests to make sure they all pass, since the EGR system, if present, would be controlled by the EEC-IV computer, and it may be able to see a fault in the EGR system.
I finally broke down and took it to my mechanic. Took the test this morning and I dont think I scored a whole number in any category (every result had a decimal in front).
