Here is an update on my high idle: when I first start the truck it idles at between 700 and 800 rpm. When I put it in park after driving it a little bit, it will idle at about 1000 rpm. What else could be wrong? Could the new idle air control valve be a deffective part? Thank you all for your help.
Any new part could possibly be defective. One of the guys I work with says "new" stands for - never ever worked. That's a little tongue in cheek however. Haynes puts out a manual on emissions systems that tells you how to check a lot of components involved with the emissions controls. I think that the first step for you though would be to buy, beg, borrow a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) so that you can check the components. I will check when I get home and advise, but I think the ohms reading on the IAC should check out at around 75 ohms. There is a Lo/High range that if it falls between it should be good. You have to get a meter first though. A decent DVOM probably cost what one of these parts cost, approx. $30. Advance Auto has that Haynes manual on emissions controls for about $16.
I don't have any more pics just yet. It was not at all difficult to install it: about 6 hours on a saturday between me and my dad. I am even going to put a 3" body lift on it tomorrow. I will probably add those pics when it is done.
O.K. it wasn't 75 ohms it's 7 - 13 ohms.
Test with the ignition key off.
Unplug the IAC and read with the DVOM set to ohms. Set it on 200 ohms. That's the lowest ohms setting on the one I have.
Technically it says to read with the positive lead on the VPWR pin and the negative lead on the ISC pin, but when I read mine it read the same either way, mainly because I couldn't really tell which pin was which. I checked the 13 yr. old one I took off thinking it was bad and the brand new one I bought to replace with and they both checked at 9.9 ohms. I replaced it anyway because I already had the new one in hand. So I would say that if you can get a DVOM and the IAC checks somewhere between 7 - 13 ohms that' s probably not the problem. This info is in the better Chilton manual that covers 1987 - 1996 Pickups and Broncos in the emissions chapter.
