I have an '89 F150 with the 4.9l inline six. I just repalced the idle air control valve and now the truck is idling up around 1000 rpm with the a/c on. My question is is this normal and if not how do I fix it? As always, thanks for all the help.
Could be a number of things. Why did you replace the Idle air control valve to begin with? When you say Idle air control valve are you meaning the valve located on the throttle body or the one in line coming off the smog pump after the air bypass valve? Could be as simple as disconnecting the battery for about (15) minutes and letting the computer reset.
The idle air control valve I replaced was the one on the throtle body. I replaced it because the truck kept dying with the a/c on and I had heard that this solved it. That problem was fixed, but now I have the high idle.
Check the TPS voltage and make sure it is less than 1V. If it's not, turn out on the idle set screw just a little bit until it drops below 1. What does it idle at when the a/c is off?
The set screw is on the throttle body, on the side of the throttle body where the throttle cables attach. It's the screw that the throttle hits when it is closed all the way.
That's too bad. I went to AUTOZONE.COM and looked at their tool loan program, but I did not see a DVOM (Digital Volt/Ohm Meter) in there. If you can't find a friend that will loan you one, you might just check with AUTOZONE to see if by chance they do loan those. It would be worth checking it before throwing some money at it. Checked on Advance Auto's site and they had two TPS's that would fit my truck, one was $29 and one was $31.
Even though I have a '87 with 5.0, I just had exactly the same thing - changed the IAC and the idle was way high - it was the TPS. My TPS is not adjustable, so I replaced it and it's fine now.
Well, replaced the TPS and still have high idle, I think it might be a vacuum leak. I am happy with my new TPS though, because my mileage has gone through the roof!!
Sorry it wasn't the TPS. You may know, but you can spray carb cleaner around any areas where you think you may have a vacuum leak and if the engine idle speeds up it could be your leak. i.e. around the throttle body or upper intake manifold. I just put an Upper Intake Manifold gasket on mine and if you have the right tools it's not that bad.
