took my truck in for studdering. diagnostic check. they found bad #4 plug and coil. wanted 330 bucks to fix it. so i bought a haynes manuel and got the tools. my cabin neighbor. same 5.4 engine has the "helms manuel". he told me i had to do alot more than what the haynes said. ford dealer wants 230 bucks to change all plugs. so what gives. u got to remove the coil to change the plugs anyway. dont see why they want to charge me 330 for one plug when i can have all done for 230 plus 100 for a ford coil. im gonna talk to service manager. good dealership. morries ford in minnetonka, mn. or ill take it to my trusted old mechanic and he charges 50 an hour and if the manuel says it takes four and he gets it done in two. he charges me that. what do u all think.. ? thanks
Its really easy to do yourself if you have any kind of mechanic experience. just unplug the coil from the harness, use a 7 or 8 mm socket to remove the coil(cant remember which one), use a long extension with a spark plug socket to get the plug out. then it goes back the same way. You do not have to remove the fuelrails to do this. The coil will manuver around it. Good luck.
well thats nice to know xtreme. are u sure about the #four plug. its way back there. lol im gonna have my friend look at soon. he knows alot about cars, but nothing about the newer ones.
I have replaced the #4 cylinder coil twice on my f-150 and it costs $30 for the coil both times. Yes the coil pack will come off without the fuelrail removal. I believe there is a link on how to change the plugs on these 5.4 motors, you may have to look around on this site but its here. Yes it will be difficult but $30 vs. $300, you choose! It's not really that hard just jump in and get to it. oh yeah, and when you are changing that pack go ahead and close your eyes and feel with your hands because you CAN NOT see way back there, closing your eyes will make you focus more on your sense of feel and all will go smooth. Just my pennies worth.....

[B] I would be intrested in why it went bad. Mine had a heater hose leak. it was tough to change , just remember to blow all the sand or dirt off before pulling the coil.
Same reason leakey hose! Suprise, suprise, huh? Yeah first time I didn't know about the hose leaking just figured the coil had gone bad. Second time made a call to dealership I purchased from and the tech told me about it. Still think it shoulda been recalled, but what goes around comes around!

Thats a common problem with them, the clamps they put on the heater hoses are junk. do yourself a favor when you do your coil, change the hose clamps also.
