I just bought a used 1997 F150 XLT 4x4, 4.2L V6, automatic transmission, lever operated 4WD, 100,000 miles...
Unfortunately, the A/C seems totally dead. The belts and fuses appear fine, but regardless of where I position the airflow switch there are no signs of life. I also checked the hoses going in/out of the compressor, and they’re both the same slightly warm temperature. At this point, I’ve exhausted my meager level of knowledge and am driving around in 90+ degree temperatures with the windows open. The dealer wants me to bring the truck in to take a look, but they’re not local so if anyone has any troubleshooting suggestions I’d really appreciate it.
I think you need to at least check to make sure the system is charged. Any shop rated for AC service can do that and I would start there. Taking it to the dealer is your option.
Thanks for the reply! The problem did in fact turn out to be due to a low charge. Now the A/C works fine; just in the nick of time for today's 98 degree temp in NJ.
Beware - if your system is low on refridgerant, there's a reason. It doesn't just magically disappear. Mine is leaking at the compressor. Time to replace.
