I've retrofitted a few R-12 vehicles to the 134a. It's quite easy. The hard part is venting the R-12 out of the system. You really should have a shop empty it out. Venting it into the atmosphere is bad...in large quantities at least . After that, the $50 retrofit kit from NAPA works wonders. Cools just as well as before. The kit has everything you need including the PAG Oil charge and the quick disconnect hose.

I converted mine just a few weeks ago (in the process of writing up a tech article for Ken) and it was fairly simple. Do NOT vent R-12 into the air. Last week on about a 90* day, traveling approx. 60mph it was blowing 30*.

Do it right the first time and it'll blow just as cold as R-12.
