Can anyone tell me if there is a cooler thermostat made any where in the world for the 96 and later powerstroke? I have been to every parts store within 300 miles. 192&195 are the only ones I can locate. I need a 170 to 180. I have made mods to my pcm and lots of other motor mods and it now runs the best at about 175deg. Currently I have the thermostat wired open but the heat of the day determines what temp it runs and we all know fluctuating temps arent good. Yalls help is surely appreciated.
Yo, dude!!! Cooler thermostat is okay. Never, ever, without exception run a diesel engine (or any other for that matter) without a thermostat. Perhaps someone did it and nothing happened. But ... the science is against you if you try.
Thermostats do more than regulate temperature. They regulate water pressure. Without a thermostat, the high velocity of coolant created by the water pump impeller will almost surely lead to cavitation. That means that the water is bubbling at the surface of the water jacket. Water bubbles are air and air inside the water jacket creates hot spots... improper engine cooling. Possible result ... meltdown. Actually, overheating, detonation to name a few problems.
I agree with OMAR, Cavitation is a major problem if you run without a t-stat. Why whould you want to run a diesel any cooler? You will experiance excess sludge build-up in the oil because it may not be running hot enough to burn the fuel. Autozone sells one for 180 degrees but they do not last long without sticking. I would stick with the OEM.
If you have a local International dealer, they carry a 180 degree thermostat. The original thermostat has a little check valve to bleed the air out of the engine while the ones from Autozone don't.
a cooler thermostat will = a hotter runnin engine, why do u want that ?
the higher the degree thermostat means the water stays in the radiator longer, allowin it to get cooler before returnin to the engine... not the opposite...
if u'r runnin hotter than u want too then put in a higher rated thermostat, not lower...
if u'r gettin cooler results doin the opposite it's because of u'r climate, not cause of the thermo bein wired open...
that's why it gets worse in the summer on ya...
u can get away with "wirin it open" in the winter in some places, but unless u don't mind buyin a new engine soon don't dare try that here in the deep south durin the summer...
maybe in alaska or wayyy up north it's different, but here where the temp stays over a 100 degrees in the summer and the humidity stays near 100% most of the year, one learns the benefits of a thermostat real quick...
good luck...
Huh? I think you've confused spark plug heat ranges with thermostats. If you install a functioning 180 degree thermostat, you can expect it to open at 180. Same with a 200 degree, that is where it is supposed to open and let cooler water enter from the radiator and circulate. I agree that running without a thermostat will overheat in extreme situations becuase of no circulation control.
