First Tow - Successful!
Well, I did in fact make it all the way from Berwyn, PA to Wickenburg, AZ without any major problems.
I think I started out with the problem/mileage thread and promised I'd put up my mileage and any problems with the rig on my trips. I've still got to go back and forth a few more times, and I'll keep y'all posted.
The Rig: '04 F350 CC 6.0 Troqshift / Exiss Event Transport Trailer (1000lb Equalizers, Single Sway Control)/ Prodigy Electric Brake Control. Trailer carried a loaded 1999 Expy. THe bed of the truck had 2 dirt bikes, car parts, and some power tools. Pretty heavy. We estimated it at 17000 lb total.
The truck carried it off without any major problems. Fuel Mileage ranged from 10.8 to 14.2. The worst was in the Ozarks in Missouri. Average was in the high 12's.
My driving buddy and I made the trip in 2.5 days straight through. The only thing we noticed as a little bit of oil coming out of the turbo hose running from the intercooler to the intake manifold. That showed up after the Ozarks and after the Continental Divide. The hose stayed on just fine, though. We only used Tow/Haul during the descent from Flagstaff, and it worked superbly. We only needed to apply the brakes a few times the whole descent (~8000 ft ->2500 ft)!
At the AZ shop, I took the hose off and cleaned it. There was only a slight trace of it there, but it was obvious where the leak was. SInce the air box has to come off to get the hose off, I looked in there, too. Apparently what it does is under real heavy load it sucks oil out of the crankcase thru the PCV system and blows in all the way around. I cleaned it all up and it's been fine ever since.
The truck has 3240 miles on it. I changed the oil with Ford 15W-40 oil. I'd say everything has been fine. I drive it back to PA in a few days.
BTW, the highest Diesel we found was right here in Wickenburg ($2.269). Cheapest was on the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma ($1.619).
