I'm trying to remove the upper intake manifold and can not find the correct tool to remove the middle bolt on the passanger side. I've tries a 5MM allen and a T30 Torx any other recommendations. Other than these. A 5MM is too small and a 5.5MM is too large The T30 does not bite enough, I've tried to flatten the 5mm to spread the tip but have no luck.
The problem you are going to run into is that T40 Bits are usually 3/8 drive. a 3/8 drive T40 socket will not fit between the intake manifold runners.
You basically have three options.
1) (The correct way) Find a T40 3/8 bit which is at least six inches long.
2) Look all over the place and hope you get lucky to find a 1/4" drive T40 Bit
3) remove the tip from the regular (short) 3/8" drive T40 Bit and cram it into a 1/4" drive socket
Once you find/make the proper tool, it will come out easily.
I agree 100% with david, I bought a 6" torx t40 bit from snap on and it worked perfectly. The torque on the upper to lower intakes is real low so breaking the torx bolt loose once you get the right tool is a breeze.
On a side note when reinstalling the upper intake have the torx bolt in place on the upper intake before you set it onto the lower. This makes life alot easier when bolting everything back together. I just had to take my upper intake off last week to install some Ford Racing valve covers and the job is really not that tough.
thank you all for these great posts...I had to do #3 above and it worked like a champ--Luckily I recently purchased a 1/4" socket set with a 6" extender. I hammered the torx out of my 3/8 bit, put the bit into one of my small , deep sockets using tape to keep it there, and it worked like a champ.
Before this I wasted about 45 mins using my telescopic magnet to put/rest the 3/8" torx bit on top of the bolt (inserted this from the side), then I inserted my 8" 3/8 extender from the top..I finally pushed the extender on top of/into the 3/8" torx bit, but the stinking bit was too wide to fit on top of the screw...what a pita that whole operation was !!
Anyway, thanks again for the most helpful posts
I just had to remove my intake, and found a site that has pretty much every configuration of torx bit you could want.. 1/4", 3/8", hex bit, T-handle, etc... and it all seems to be pretty good quality stuff too. Check out Wiha Tools on the internet...
