If the switch doesn't do it, there is also an intermittent relay (I think it's under the dash). If you look at the wiring diagram, you'll see what I mean.
Mike, I saw that relay listed but the Ford Parts Network didnt seem to have it available. Any idea exactly under the dash it is? Do you have a part number so I can do a proper search for it? Thanks!
Sorry, I don't know the part number. I suspect a dealer could give you that. I believe it's under the dash, to the right of the steering wheel (see my first post in this thread).
In my case, I did the troubleshooting with the voltmeter, and figured out that it was indeed the motor. You might be able to do the same to try to determine if your module is bad.
In your case, the motor seems good. I suspect that the switch is a less expensive part to replace than the intermittent module, so I'd start there.
I thought of the short and figured if there was a short, the switch would be the first place to check. It seems the breaker trips and causes the wipers to stop working until the breaker resets to the "on" position. But the breaker only trips in the intermittent mode, everything else works fine. I would like to replace the breaker and see what happens, perhaps it is worn, but have you tried to find a 6 AMP breaker? Its like impossible and I dont want to use a 10 AMP and risk frying something else.
The part number for the relay/governor is: FOTZ 17C476-A in case anyone needs it.
I'll replace the switch and see what happens, hopefully it solves the problem.
I have a 1996 Explorer that was having problems with the wipers. They would only work in the Hi position - Lo and intermittent would not work at all. There are 2 relays under the hood in the power distribution box for the wipers - one is called the Wiper relay, the other one is called the Wiper Hi/Lo relay (according to my owner's manual). I had to replace both relays to get the wipers back to full operating status. I got them from Napa - they cost $7.49 each. The Ford part number was useless at Napa, they couldn't match it up. He looked up the vehicle in their system though and they had a relay listed for the wiper so I purchased 2 of those and they match perfectly. The Napa part number is ECHAR661. I'm not sure if this would be the same for a 91 Explorer or not though.
