So I got in my truck today and my wipers only wanted to work on high... I left them on intermittent and they suddenly started working and worked in all positions too? I replaced the motor a few months ago and they haven't been run since. Is there a way to open and clean the switch?
Also, very curious if the wipers are supposed to run when you push the washer or are you supposed to turn the wipers on before washing?
But of course! It's actually a 91 F350 but I posted it here because the switch is the same as the 80-86 trucks. Some things like this if I post in the 87-96 forums they automatically assume 92-96 which is completely different.
Well running to work today they weren't working on low or intermittent again so I smacked the dash under the switch and they started working... For a minute. I'm thinking from the EVTM Gary has posted on his website that it's probably either the ground or the "intermittent wiper governor" box.
Does anyone know where the ground is located for this? I'll crawl under the there and look but it's 40° and raining so it might be a while.
A common problem I have seen on many different vehicles is the ground going from the motor to the firewall under the hood. Most all wiper motors are mounted in rubber mounts to make them quiet. So they have short grounds from the motor housing to the firewall. Some are just thin flat pieces of metal that will crack over time, making connection and then not making connection.
I know you pounded on the dash to make it go, but if you can't find the problem under there I would check out how motor is grounded under the hood. Maybe you hit the dash hard enough to bounce the firewall area too.
The ground is a wire coming from the *switch* with a forked terminal on the end.
On my '87 it is screwed to the dash structure near the fuse panel.
The solder joints of the governor module heatsink are usually the problem.
There is a reason the box says "do not drop", and yet Ford attached it to the parking brake release where it gets jarred every time the truck is driven.
I removed the mounting arm, wrapped my governor up in foam rubber and zip tied it behind the fuse panel.
Hasn't failed since.
