Being new to ford diesels, I'm not educated on a lot of topics. One of my concerns is engine cavitation. I purchased a '93 7.3 turbo diesel with about a 112k miles. What are some symptoms to watch for concerning cavitation?
If the cavitation is severe enough, you'll have excessive pressure in your cooling system, ie. radiator. This is caused by the tiny pin holes in the cylinder wall allowing compression gas into the cooling system. You can also end up with a hydraulic lock condition if the coolant enters the cylinder on top of the piston when the engine is shut down. This is worst case scenario. I wouldn't worry about it if you know the history of the vehicle.
I don't know much about the vehicle. It runs real good except my alternator caught fire on the road. The coolant looks good but I haven't tested it to see if it has the proper additive in it.
I would venture a guess that your truck has lived a rather easy life thus far. Most cavitation problems show up in engines that are worked rather hard on a continous basis.
You can also get the strips at any truck stop, (usually) and heavy truck dealership including Cat, Cummins, and Detroit. Whatever you do, don't overcharge the system. The additive will turn to gel and plug your radiator.
