1990 F150 Steering Play

My steering gear has way more play in than I think it should have. I went and got a rebuilt one from Autozone and installed it. It has just about as much as the one I took out. You can grab the steering shaft under the hood and turn it back and forth. The pitman arm does not move. I would say 2-3 degrees of play at the steering wheel maybe more. Has anyone replaced the gear before? Did the new gear take most, if not all of the play out of it? I am wondering if they gave me a gear that the had the seals replaced, not the gears. My 88 BroncoII has about the same gear, it has some play, but not near what the f150 has.
