So, today my friend and I went to circle K to get some beer, being not quite 21 I stayed in the car. well when we pulled up there were these 4 scurvey looking people walking into the store I believe it was 1 indian ladie 2 mexican guys and a white guy... anyways we pulled up and they were going in, not more than 30 seconds later they all can walking out as casual as could be, each carrying 3 30 packs of bud light, and behind them was the manager looking quite annoyed. she walked behind thier car and got the plate number, and as she was walking inside muttering the make and model of the car I realized what they had done....
middle of the day, in front of god and everybody, and on a Sunday no less, they went in and grabbed a BUNCH of beer and walked out and drove off. It shocked the hell out of me. I dont know if they ever got the people, we stayed there while the ladie was on the phone with the cops, and she has kinda followed the car to the edge of the parking lot and watched them pull into a residential area not too far away. My friend and I went to look for them but didnt find them.
My point being, appearently there was some law or store policy or SOMETHING that stopped this ladie or anyone else from physicaly trying to stop these people.
Most stores have policies against pursuing shoplifters. If the people are bold enough (or high/stoned/whatever) to do this in broad daylight, imagine what they might do when confronted.
I friend of mine was a manager at a grocery store who chased down a shoplifter and was fired because of it. The stores have very strict policies about this, I don't know if it is because of insurance or just liability. BTW, he got a job the very same afternoon across town with the competing grocery store.
Most stores have policies about chasing shoplifters. When I worked for Walmart, we had an incident where a support manager tried to chase some shoplifters. He was the type of person who thought that he was invincible and high and mighty and that nobody could get away from him. Well one night, he tried to catch some kids stealing and ran out the door after them. The guy jumped into a truck and got ready to drive off. The manager tried reaching into the door and take their keys from them. Well they got the vehicle cranked and started taking off while his arm was still inside the truck. He hurt his arm but I don't remember how bad. He could have had his arm ripped off. Everyone told him he was stupid because they could have pulled a gun and shot him right there and killed or seriously hurt him.
Thats one of the reasons why they say to get a description of them, their vehicle and their liscense number if you can and call the police. Because you never know who you are going against and whether or not they have a gun or other weapon.
sounds like an interesting story. i am not all suprised. wanna hear a real stupid story...some indian guy already drunk off his ***, walks into our little grocery store here in town. i live in a town of about 175, so its a small store. well he goes in, finds a bottle of rubbing alcohol, steals it, walks next door to the bar, sits down, and starts drinking it. sounds like an idiot to me...but it really happened. .....how can some people be so stupid.....
When I worked in retail, we had a store manager that thought he was Bruce Willis. He chased a shoplifter out into the parking lot, where the guy reached into his car, pulled out a pistol and pointed it right at the manager's forehead. He pulled the trigger,and- click, it was empty. The manager learned his lesson, real quick. I recall we had to take him right over to K-Mart and buy him some new underwear.........
