When I run the codes on my truck I am getting the code for the Neutral Safety Switch. I am unfamiliar with this. What does it do exactly and how would it affect my truck? Everything seems to be running well. Also, where is this located on an 87 Ranger with a 2.9 Manual 4X4? Thanks.
The neutral safety switch allows starting in Park or neutral only. Strange that you would get that code on a manual trans. But I woould'nt worry about it. Well I just took a look at the wiring diagrm & it does show a neutral "sensing" switch on the drivers side of the manual trans. Not sure what the purpose of it is. It's just below the shift lever. Put it in neutral & pull the codes again.
I have an 88' 4x2 that I just replaced the trans on. This little piece of crap caused me to stop in the middle of installing the new trans. There are 2 on these trucks 1) is on the passenger's side of the trans way up top on the side of the valve body (on the Mazda trans). 2) is on the clutch pedal. I got a rebuilt trans and while swapping the sensors and clips I noticed there was no place on the new one to put this sensor. I called the trans distributor, and one of the techs said that it is redundant. Ford supposedly did away with it sometime in the early 90's. So they said to leave the wire unplugged. So if you are getting codes, you can check the one on the pedal and the one on the passenger side of the trans.
This one is the reverse switch on the driver's side, but the other will look just like it on the other side.
