Shimmy when brakes applied

I posted a few weeks back about a grinding in my frontend on my 02 CC 4X4 PSD. Got some great info on it. The grind is still there, but not any louder. Now it has a slight shimmy in the steering wheel when the brakes are applied. Could this be a wheel bearing? What is the best way to check? How much to have Ford replace? Could an old shade tree mechanic/drag racer do the job, and where do I get instructions?

Thanks,

TJ

Could be from a warped rotor, definately check with dealer, could be a warranty issue...

I'd put my money on a warped rotor. If I'm right it could be warped due to a caliper not sliding in the bracket. Make sure you fix the cause, and not just the symptom. Any time you feel a vibration in the steering wheel you can be pretty sure it's in the front end.

Thanks guys. The truck has 59000 on it. It doesn't do it all the time, mostly when braking going down a hill. If the caliper is stuck wouldn't that make a rubbing or light grinding noise?

For sure I would check the caliper if it's doing it worse when the brakes get hot. See if both brake pads are close to the same thickness. If they ain't- the caliper is not sliding in the bracket. I wire brush the mating surfaces and apply a light coat of anti-seize. If both pads are the same size the piston in the caliper may be sticking out and not retracting. Steel brake tubing can be dented by foreign objects and cause the caliper to stick. rubber lines can separate inernally and block proper brake fluid flow. Those would be my things to look for.
The grinding noise may very well be metal to metal contact and if it is you need to cut your costs and find out now before the damage is worse. Hope it's something simple.
